Abolish Nuclear Weapons Now!
2012 Annual Pax Christi New Mexico Hiroshima Day Commemoration
"Sackcloth and Ashes" Sunday at 5 PM, Ashley Pond Park
August 3-6: workshops, inspiring speakers, celebrity activists, hard-hitting films and music, large-scale non-violent direct action, a march to the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a hunger strike (which began on Trinity Test anniversary July 16) and more.
August 3-4: Make Art, Not War art show at El Museo Cultural in Santa Fe (555 Camino De La Familia, in the Railyard) from 5pm to 7pm, and from 12pm to 7pm on Saturday August 4th. More than 20 artists have submitted their work
August 4 (Saturday): All-day conference at the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA, 1050 Old Pecos Trail) in Santa Fe. Starting at 9am and running through the evening, the conference features some of the leading anti-nuke experts and peace activists from around the country, including Arjun Makhijani, Pancho Ramos Stierle, Kristen Iversen, Father John Dear, Linda Gunter, Cynthia Jurs, Jay Coglan, Joni Arends, and others. Panels will give an overview of the very real concerns about the Los Alamos National Laboratory, explore the impact that LANL has had on the communities and environment of New Mexico, take a deep look into what non-violent, spiritual activism and community action looks like, and debunk the touted economic benefits of the nuclear weapons industry. There will also be presentations on the links between nuclear weapons and nuclear power, the U.S. military's upgrading of existing weapons, and exactly how the U.S. progressed from Pearl Harbor to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Also at CCA we will present two films: The Forgotten Bomb by local film-maker, Bud Ryan, followed by a Q&A session, and White Light, Black Rain, an HBO documentary on the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
August 5 (Sunday): Rally at Ashley Pond Park in Los Alamos, the birthplace of nuclear weapons. Starting at 12pm the afternoon will include speakers, music, and teach-ins. At 5.15pm we will create an audio link to the sounding of the Peace Bell in Hiroshima, the exact time that the bomb was dropped on Japan that fateful day 67 years ago. Following that join Pax Christi for their annual "Sackcloth and Ashes" march of peace and commemoration to LANL, and the floating of peace lanterns on Ashley Pond.
